American designer Tom Ford, returns to London Fashion Week for a second season in a row, to showcase his new collection.
LONDON, ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM (SEPTEMBER 16,2013) (REUTERS) - American designer Tom Ford unveiled his new collection in front of a star studded front row, with actorsTom Firth and Cate Blanchett spotted at his show.
Ford showed off his dazzling designs on Monday (September 16) on the penultimate day of London Fashion Week.
The 52-year old designer created an intimate setting, where models sparkled as they sashayed down the catwalk, with their embellished garments reflecting the spotlights that lit their path along the catwalk.Speaking about his spring/summer look for next year, Ford said this collection is all about dressing the 'powerful'Tom Ford woman, who wants to show off her toned physique.
''This season I wanted it to be quite strong and athletic, you know in the summer you exercise and your body is toned, your thighs are toned, your shoulders, you've been swimming, you need minimal things on your face hopefully because you have a fresh, natural glow, and that was really, I wanted to create this powerful woman on the runway.''
The collection included short thigh-skimming dresses, figure hugging trousers and oversized jackets.
Models also wore lace and bejewelled bodices, a look that Ford described as being "sensual more than sexy".
''Sexy in a way that seems a little chaste at first, and then when you really look, you realise 'oh wow' so different than full on sexy, then a lot of work went into the textures of the collection. For spring you don't have layers, you don't have sweaters, you don't have many coats and you don't have velvet, and you don't have these things that as a designer you can play with, so you have surface and you have texture, and you have fabric, and that was very important,'' he told Reuters.
Ford's collections were once displayed behind closed doors to private clients and editors of glossy fashion magazines. But this is Ford's second catwalk show on the London Fashion Week schedule, and he says the city has a certain charm and pulling power.
''The people are what I love about London, the manners, the sort of eccentricity. The fact that being eccentric is admired here, a lot of style is admired here, it's something that's respected in the culture. As I said the formality, the structure, the tradition, the sense of humour, the people are really what make the city. I don't come here for the weather,'' he said.
With around 100 Tom Ford stores, the American designer has an internationally-established global footprint, and despite the economic climate, Ford says his clientele are still splashing out on his designs.
Ford showcased his collection on the same day as heritage British fashion brand Burberry, and Scottish designer Christopher Kane. The five day fashion event ends on Tuesday (September 17).
