TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA (AUGUST 19, 2012) (CBC) - An Ontario teen has became the youngest person to swim across Lake Ontario on Sunday (August 19).
Ontario teen Annaleise Carr swims 52 kilometers across one of the Great Lakes to raise money for children's cancer charity, and becomes the youngest person ever to cross the lake.
Shortly after sunset, Annaleise Carr finished her 27 hour, 52-kilometre journey between Niagara on the Lake and Toronto, both cities in Ontario.
The 14-year-old swimmer from the town of Simcoe arrived at Marilyn Bell Park and climbed into an ambulance after hugging her family and receiving congratulatory cheers from hundreds of supporters on the shore.
The teen was examined by her doctor before heading to the hospital for a routine exam mandated by Solo Swims of Ontario, the provincial swimming body that governs people participating in a long-distance swims.
The start of Carr's swim was postponed by a day due to high winds and she was forced off course by more a than a kilometer by bad weather that was strong enough to make passengers on the boats accompanying her seasick.
The swim was designed to raise money for Camp Trilium, a camp for children with cancer. Carr has raised more than $70,000 (Canadian dollars) to date.
In 1954, Marilyn Bell of Toronto became the first person to swim across the lake. She was 16.
