A four-legged chicken awaits its fate at a Jerusalem slaughter house.
JERUSALEM (JUNE 28, 2011) REUTERS - A four-legged chicken hatched in a Jerusalem slaughter house last month became the centre of debate over its kosher label.
The four legged bird drew crowds of curious onlookers to the slaughter house, in the ultra orthodox Jerusalem neighbourhood of Mea Shearim. The twelve-toed chicken awaited its fate in a cage on the floor of the Kroish family's slaughter house, waiting for local rabbis to decide whether or not the animal was kosher.
"I've seen three twice, four is a little strange," said Yoel Kroish, the owner of the slaughter house.
If the legs are tied together, according to local rabbis, the chicken is not kosher. This they said could only be determined by slaughtering the animal.
"I don't know, for now we will give it to the rabbis to check if it is kosher or not. If it's kosher, we will slaughter it, if not, we will see what to do," Kroish said.
However, the special bird may still escape the butchers knife if Mr. Kroish decides to go ahead with his plan and sell the chicken to the highest bidder, according to media reports.
