Snow may be on the ground, but love is in the air on Valentine's Day, and even a snow storm can't stop flower deliveries in New York City.
NEW YORK, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES (FEBRUARY 14, 2014) (REUTERS) - A soggy snowstorm could not dampen the Valentine's Day sprit in New York City.
Colorful flower bouquets were being delivered on Friday (February 14) on foot, by van and by taxi cab one day after a winter snowstorm dumped about 10 inches (25 centimeters) of snow in New York, according to AccuWeather.Inside Starbright Floral Design in Manhattan's Flower District, designers were feverishly, but meticulously, arranging flower sets, with each red rose packed to perfection.
Nic Faitos, the senior partner at Starbright Floral Design, said in addition to his normal staff of 30, an extra 125 temporary workers were hired to help with the day's deliveries.
"Well, it's Valentine's Day. It's really busy. We got hit with a storm as everybody knows. And what we are trying to do is to keep our deliveries going, keep them on time and get every single flower to every single sweetheart all over Manhattan," he said cheerfully.
Despite the snow, Faitos said, deliveries were being made around the clock.
"The first delivery actually made it out at nine o'clock last night that was scheduled for today. Today started with deliveries being made in earnest at five o'clock in the morning when we deliver orders to hotels because hotels can accept deliveries 24 hours a day. So before businesses were even open at eight o'clock, we had already delivered about 300 deliveries."
And deliveries will continue well into the evening.
While the heavy snowfall has created some transportation setbacks, Faitos said " foot soldiers and subways" will help him meet cupid's challenge.
