NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES (AUGUST 8, 2012) (REUTERS) - Eleven of the fastest texters in America faced off on Wednesday (August 8) hoping to be crowned the U.S. National Texting Champion.
Tensions were high as the contestants were judged on speed and accuracy during eight rounds of the text-off.
Seventeen-year-old Austin Weirschke from Queens, New York proved to have the nimblest fingers and took home the title for a second year in a row.
"Texting in that last round I was like this is a really impossible phrase. I was trying to take my time on it but I really wanted to win it again so I just went as fast as I could and tried to do my best and Kent did a really good job and he was really accurate so I was really nervous. But it worked out and I am really happy," Weirschke said.
Texters face off in Times Square at the U.S. National Texting Championship.
Weirschke won a prize of $50,000 (USD), which he says he will use to help fund his college education.
