Berlin star designer Michalsky hosts StyleNite at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week under the motto: Broken Promises.
BERLIN, GERMANY (JANUARY 18, 2013) (REUTERS) - One of the highlights of Berlin Fashion Week, the traditional Michalsky's StyleNite, held on Friday (January 18) did not disappoint.
Michael Michalsky, celebrated as one of Germany's most influential designers has been running his own label since 2006 and is a much-loved regular at the capital's fashion week. With sleek cuts and flowing lines Michalsky's 2013 collection show-cased his traditional mix of streetwear with classic styles for men and women.
The result is a wearable collection, that this year carries a social and political inspiration.
"How often have I sat around with friends in the last 6 months, in my kitchen, with them talking or crying about the fact that they have been let down by some friend who broke a promise. And I just realised that in our day and age promises just don't mean that much any more. And I wanted to draw attention to this because I think it is something very wonderful to make a promise and then keep it," Michalsky told Reuters TV backstage.
"I develop my ideas with a lot of research, inspiration from colours. I always create a print. For example I have created a print for women that is printed on silk, like crushed newspapers, which I see as a message carrier like for when politicians or whoever, make promises to the masses," he said.
"On one of these newspapers there is a ballet dancer dancing. I think ballerinas are a nice symbol for broken promises because they are often girls who start training at 5 years-old with the hope to one day perform the dying swan and then at some point they are told: sorry, you are too tall, or too heavy. So I think this is a nice symbol," he added.
Besides working as a fashion designer Michalsky who was born in 1967 in Goettingen, runs his own design agency.
He quotes his most important inspirations as being music and photography.
