Weekend chores are the starting off point for one of the newer organized competitive sports: lawn mower racing.
BERRIEN COUNTY, MICHIGAN, UNITED STATES (MAY 21, 2011) HANDOUT-WALT DISNEY STUDIOS - Seeing a natural fit, The U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Organization hosted a "Gnomeo and Juliet" themed lawn mower race as gnome-hatted drivers mounted their rides, escaping their manicured suburban lawns for a circular dirt track. While ostensibly a sanctioned event, the "Mow-down Showdown" was also a none-too disguised promotional event for the Blu-ray and DVD release of "Gnomeo & Juliet."
Lawn mower racers and cheering fans alike donned the film's red and blue hats, each representing one of the feuding gnome families. Richard Webb was crowned the winner the event.
The lawn mower races will continue this year's season of lawn mower races across the country featuring a total of 140 sanctioned races in 37 states. Races feature seven classes of mowers with participants competing against one another for the right to be named turf titan.
Established in 1992, the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association is the nation's oldest and largest national lawn mower racing sanctioning body and includes a network of 50 Local Chapters and Affiliated Clubs.
