BANGKOKTHAILAND (NOVEMBER 22, 2013) (REUTERS) -  Thailand broke the Guinness World Record on Friday (November 22) for forming the largest human Christmas tree at a shopping mall in Bangkok.

852 students crowded onto a plaza at Siam Paragon Shopping Centre to form the tree while Christmas music played in the background and shoppers walked by curiously to see what was going on.

Guinness World Record judge Fortuna Burke flew in from London to oversee the event.

"All of the participants have to be wearing an identical color, apart from say the base of the Christmas tree and also the decorations and the Christmas decoration on top. And all of the... everyone has to be standing within the space," Burke said.

The event also marked a good way to kick off the Christmas shopping season inThailand.

"This year we came together to think of an activity to celebrate the Christmas season. And we got the idea of forming the world's biggest Christmas tree," saidSiam Paragon Shopping Centre's senior director Chittinee Jompratchaya.

The previous record was held by Germany with a tree consisting of 672 people.
