Nineteen-month-old Daniele De Sanctis in full papal garb, including skull cap and white robe, was handed to the Pope as he passed through the crowd during the general audience in St. Peter's square.

Pope Francis then kissed him affectionately on the cheek.

The young boy though, was not impressed by the gesture from the leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics, making it quite clear that this carnival experience was a bit too much for him.

An emotional Daniele was beamed around the world on Vatican television.

Children often put on fancy dress clothes during the carnival season in Italy.
