Designer Carolina Herrera unveils her vision for Spring 2011, with a collection of florals featuring a Korean twist.

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES (SEPTEMBER 13, 2010)  REUTERS - Designer Carolina Herrera presented her collection for Spring / Summer 2011 at New York Fashion Week on Monday (September 13).

The designer showcased a collection of pretty florals, with a Korean twist.

Herrera said the colours, prints and floral appliqués were taken from botanical plates collected in the 18th Century, while the fabric cut and details were inspired by traditional clothes from Korea.

"The whole idea started in the botanical prints from the 18th century, which I took from this beautiful book with the botanical prints and I used it for the materials," Herrera told Reuters Television backstage before the show.

"So that's the beginning of the collection which, you know, botanical prints have a lot of colour so that's the idea for the colours and the flowers and the prints. And then I went a little bit to Korea for the traditional Korean dresses and the look of the Korean, which is not exactly like the idea came exactly as they use it, no. It's just the idea for the cuts of the sleeves, the cuts of the skirts and maybe the new volumes and something like that," she added.

Many of the models took the catwalk wearing traditional Korean men's hats.

"The hat is very amusing because it is the hat that the Korean men use in Korea. So it's a lovely idea with all the you know, all the details", Herrera said.

"This collection is about details and about colours. And the colours because I think we come out, when we have Spring and Summer, we are coming out from a very long season which is grey and black and I think women seek colour and they're very happy about it and I think that's the idea why I have all these bright colours," she added.

This year, Mercedes-Benz named Herrera as its 'Mercedes-Benz Presents' designer for the Lincoln Center's first-ever Fashion Week. The award recognises designers for their dedication to quality, unique style and innovative design.

New York Fashion Week runs through September 16.
